What Is Vape Juice (E-Liquid)?

Vape juice — also called e-liquid — is the liquid your device heats and turns into vapor. Despite the huge variety of brands and flavors, every bottle is built from the same four ingredients:

  • PG (Propylene Glycol): a thin, clear carrier that delivers flavor sharply and gives that “throat hit” that feels similar to a cigarette.
  • VG (Vegetable Glycerin): a thicker, slightly sweet, plant-based carrier that produces the vapor clouds and gives a smoother inhale.
  • Flavorings: food-grade flavor concentrates — this is where fruit, dessert, tobacco, and menthol profiles come from.
  • Nicotine (optional): added in a chosen strength, or left out entirely in zero-nicotine e-liquids.

The way these four are balanced is what makes one juice a smooth pod-friendly liquid and another a cloud-heavy sub-ohm juice.

PG vs VG: What the Ratio on the Bottle Means

You’ll often see a ratio like 50/50 or 70/30 on a bottle. That’s the VG/PG balance, and it tells you a lot about how the juice will feel:

  • 50/50 (balanced): more throat hit, sharper flavor, less vapor. Ideal for beginners, pod systems, and anyone switching from cigarettes using a mouth-to-lung (MTL) style. This is the most forgiving ratio to start with.
  • 70/30 (high-VG): big clouds, smoother inhale, softer throat hit. Made for higher-powered sub-ohm tanks and direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping.

Simple rule: small pod or beginner device → 50/50. Bigger sub-ohm tank for clouds → 70/30.

Freebase vs Salt Nicotine: The Most Important Difference

This is the choice that confuses most beginners, but it’s simple once you know the logic. Both are the same nicotine — the difference is how it’s processed and how it feels.

Freebase Nicotine

Nicotine in its classic form. It has a stronger, brighter throat hit that grows quickly as strength climbs, so it’s blended at lower strengths (0mg–18mg). Freebase pairs best with sub-ohm tanks and high-VG juice for bigger clouds and rich flavor.

Salt Nicotine (Nic Salt)

A smoother, refined form of the same nicotine (bound with benzoic acid). It stays smooth even at high strengths (20mg–50mg) and absorbs into the bloodstream faster, so it satisfies cravings quickly. Nic salt is designed for small pods and low-power devices.

Which should you pick? They’re tuned for different gear, so the device in your hand usually decides:

  • Big sub-ohm tank, you like clouds → freebase.
  • Small pod or compact device, you want a quick, satisfying hit → salt nic.

Choosing Your Nicotine Strength

Picking the right strength matters: too low and you’ll keep vaping to chase satisfaction, too high and it feels harsh. A rough guide based on your previous smoking habit:

  • Non-smoker / quitting nicotine entirely: 0mg — go for zero-nicotine e-liquids and enjoy pure flavor.
  • Light smoker (up to ~10 cigarettes/day): 3–6mg freebase, or ~10–20mg salt nic in a pod.
  • Moderate to heavy smoker: 12–18mg freebase, or 20–35mg salt nic.
  • Heavy smoker on a small pod: up to 50mg salt nic.

If you’re switching from cigarettes and using a pod, a salt nic around 10–20mg is the most common starting point — enough to curb cravings without overwhelming you.

Vape Juice Flavor Categories

Flavor is where vaping gets fun. Here are the main families, from easiest to most complex:

  • Fruit: the most popular category — bright, sweet, and easy to vape all day (strawberry, mango, mixed tropical).
  • Menthol & Mint: cool and refreshing, great on their own or layered over fruit for an icy finish.
  • Tobacco: the closest experience to a cigarette, often smoothed with vanilla or caramel — a favorite for new switchers.
  • Dessert: rich and indulgent (custard, cake, cream). Deeply satisfying, but heavy desserts can cause “flavor fatigue” if vaped all day.
  • Beverage & Candy: colas, energy-drink and sweet-candy profiles for something playful.

How to choose your first flavor: think about what you already like to eat and drink — your taste doesn’t suddenly change when you start vaping. Beginners usually do best starting with a simple fruit, menthol, or tobacco, and buying a few smaller bottles to experiment before committing to a favorite.
